Between last summer (2007) and this summer (2008) the mice and squirrels of the area decided that the Loft was the perfect place to take up residence.
It took some doing to convince them that this was not so. They seem to prefer cheddar cheese.

A mouse barrier to the loft from the garage. Mice were running all over the place, especially at night. It was the only way to get some sleep.
The barrier is just a sheet of gyproc held in place by two rolled-up Wines of Nova Scotia posters.

Perhaps they were crawling up between the footing and the walls. We installed a wooden flashing flush against the side boards and the concrete footing to eliminate this possibility.

And, we built (this is the prototype) a pair of screened garage doors which fit snuggly to the floor concrete. Screen salvaged from last year's gazebo.
I think this is what did the trick. The meesses had gnawed a hole in the corner of the garage door proper. Oh, it just occurred to me, maybe a bit of metal flashing on the bottom to prevent further chewing.
As you can see, the wooden flashing is not finished in the front, just yet. Ran out of materials.
