Protest

This is an interesting story about Annapolis Royal as related by Mark:

The end of our motorcycle trip across Canada culminated in our joining a protest against Canadian involvement in war; and in Afghanistan especially. Here is a picture:

Note the, "NO Afghanistan, NO NATO" sign with Green Party on the bottom. I made that one.

The town is Annapolis Royal, one of the world's most liveable communities. We ended our motorcycle trip there. On a Saturday. At 1:00 PM. And on riding into town I spied a protester standing on the corner holding up a protest sign. I beeped my horn in support ... and rode across the intersection to congratulate him and shake his hand. He stated later that he was a bit surprised because not too many motorcyclists are anti-war. I gave him the "green party" button I was wearing on my shirt.

While I was talking to him I took off my helmet and dark glasses and he says, "Are you Mark?" Then I recognised him as Laurie McGowan.

Hey, small world. Twenty years ago we were both busy saving the earth in one way or another and met. "Certified organic farming" was our activity way back then.

Laurie drives a veggie-mobile. He's a good man. NDP supporter. Too bad. All talk no action, that party. When I was younger I was an NDP supporter but switched to Green after they became vote whoring.

Greens are the only value-based party, and I like that; it means no flip-flops. Greens don't support war; we're the only party of peace and have long had as policy withdrawl from NATO (we don't support nuclear-based militaries).

Anyway, they (the protesters) want to run the protest every Saturday, all-year round. Until Canada gets out of Afghanistan. That's great! Annapolis Royal is full of good people. And it has the infamous Peacekeeping Centre ... which is actually a warmongering centre expousing Bush'isms but that's another posting. The "peacekeeping" personnel, by the way, do not participate in the peace demonstrations.

Wolfville, NS, I am told has been running a peace protest every Saturday since March of 2003! Good on ya, mates.

Nova Scotia is full of greens. They just don't know it yet.
