Ephedra sinica

Common Name: Ephedra herb

Tincture: 1:4 @ 45%.
Narration:
Bronchodilators are particularly indicated for asthmatic conditions. Their action is based on andrenergic activity (stimulating the sympathetic system). The problem is that other components of the sympathetic system are also stimulated. Agents are required which stimulate the b-receptors (broncho- and vaso-dilators) instead of a-receptors (autonomic nervous system). L-ephedrine has an a-adrenergic effect particularly on the peripheral circulation. However, D-y-ephedrine is strongly b-adrenergic and has the edge in overall balance. Therefore, the remedy is very useful for bronchial spasm and has only a minimal hypertensive effect.
Note: the alternative to bronchodilation is to decrease sympathetic tone and this can be done by smoking Datura stramonium which has a dramatic effect in aborting asthma attacks.
