| Catechutannic acid | 20 - 35%. |
| Flavonoid | Quercetin (similar action to Silymarin). |
| Mucilage and gum | Effective emulsifying agent for oil-water suspensions. Non-toxic. May be used intravenously to restore plasma colloid osmotic pressure in nephrotic or posthaemorrhagic shock. |
| Tannin | Condensed. Phlobathenes give characteristic red colour. |
