Pathology:
Cholesterol is the 'lead ballast' used within lipoproteins to weight them appropriately for transport about the body. Heavy ballast (HDL) lipoproteins transports nutrients to larger organs and tissues such as the liver and heart, while lighter ballast (eg.LDL) brings lipid components to more superficial tissues such as blood vessels.
Chronic vascular disease states will have higher LDL-cholesterol demands than will healthier states.
